SOFT REBELLION
Soft Rebellion is a visual immersion into youth, beauty and personal essence.
Where colour, texture, and individuality converge in quiet defiance.
Soft Rebellion came from a place of curiosity, a need to
connect and explore colour, texture, and individuality without
rules. Capturing beauty in its most natural state, where skin
still breathes and expression feels alive through the soft grain
of film. Defying the rules of modern beauty norms and paying
homage to traditional analog photography.
Working with a team of artists based in Byron Bay, we played
with duality; gentle tones against striking textural styling, radiant
skin beside graphic pops of colour. Each model brought their
personal essence, each creative explored their own dynamic
flare. Together, it became less about perfection and more
about connection, presence, and flow. An act of quiet defiance.
The series is an ode to both fashion and beauty. The clothing
dances between the old and the new, the styling a blend of
vintage and Australian designers paired with luminous, youthful,
skin-centred makeup using key products from the Australian
beauty brand Eye of Horus. Shot across medium format,
35mm film and analog video, the result is raw, unfiltered, and
playful--a nod to the innocent naiveté from which it is inspired.
It’s an ode to youth, experimentation, and the freedom found in
embracing one’s unique expression.
Produced, directed, and shot by photographer and makeup
artist Cedar Purchase, this series was an opportunity to express
her creativity and connect with a team of passionate creatives
in the industry. Stripped-back natural beauty and soft low-
contrast film photography is at the core of Cedar’s style. She
is passionate about capturing her subject’s inner essence, and
bringing out their confidence through the celebration of their
natural beauty. She created the body of work as an opportunity
for viewers to experience this transformation alongside her.
Working with models in development, this shoot played with
the unrefined innocence and softness that comes with fresh
faces in the industry.
